Challenge of the Crusty Pastern

Janet Littlewood, MA PhD BVSc(Hons) DVR DVD MRCVS,

Janet came to specialise in dermatology after clinical training in internal medicine and a period in research. After heading the dermatology unit at the Animal Health Trust she established her own clinical referral service in East Anglia. She has over 30 years experience in referral dermatology and holds the RCVS Diploma and is a RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology. She has a particular interest in hypersensitivity disorders, cutaneous manifestations of internal disease and equine dermatology. Interests outside of seeing scabby dogs, cats and horses include choral singing, two grown-up sons and an aged Jack Russell terrier.

In this presentation, Dr Janet Littlewood will present on the “Challenge of the Crusty Pastern”. After Janet’s presentation she will be joined by Dr Sue Paterson in a facilitated discussion on the management of cases. Learning Objectives: 1) Appreciate the most common presenting signs of pastern dermatitis in the horse and the most important differential diagnoses 2) Learn about the approach to cases of pastern dermatitis and the most important diagnostic tests 3) Gain an insight into the most recent advances in our knowledge of the equine skin microbiome and how it contributes to the development of the disease and how this knowledge might influence the therapy of skin disease in the horse.
